The Quantified Self concept refers to the use of technologies for collecting data about peoples’ daily activities. Smartphone apps, physical activity trackers, biometric sensors and IoT devices allow people to monitor important aspects of their daily lives, such as their physical activity, heart rate and mood, with the aim to learn more about themselves, improve their well-being and adopt a healthier lifestyle. In this context, the user is capable of not only storing their data to a location of their choice, such as their own server or private cloud, but also sharing their data with whomever they choose, such as their social circle or their physician. However, the process of sharing this data remains complex, mainly due to the fact that each vendor uses different communication mechanisms and requires a separate application for the persistent storage and visualization of data.Continue reading
Consortium partners have recently published a new wave of press releases about the AGILE project. These press releases are interesting to read because they present different facets of the AGILE project: how the project is perceived by these partners, how they see their role in making the project a success, and more.
In some cases, it is difficult to explain the added value of a technology unless you are deeply involved in the area concerned. For the AGILE project, things seem much easier. The AGILE approach is domain agnostic so the diverse pilots have both multi-domain context and societal impact: they speak to us, for example, because they are related to our everyday life (retail, healthcare or pollution environment) or because they may impact future approaches to world animal protection.
AGILE will also help to enable community participation by piloting an IoT testbed that will allow users to evaluate their applications before deployment.
The project plans to execute 5 pilot projects:
- Pilot A – Management of QuantifiedSelf data and apps
- Pilot B – Open Field & Cattle monitoring using UAVs (Drones)
- Pilot C – Air quality & Pollution monitoring
- Pilot D – Enhanced Retail services
- Pilot E – Port Area Monitoring for Public Safety
Orange, i-Minds and Rombit participate in the Agile European Horizon 2020 project in order to investigate how drones can be used in case of a fire, explosion or other incident in the Antwerp Port regions. How can drones be deployed to get a better insight in the situation even before the emergency services arrive by using sensors and images sent through the Agile gateway and over the Orange 4G network in real time. More use cases in safety and environment are considered, which is one of the AGILE Pilot Projects, Air Quality and Pollution Monitoring.
Two AGILE partners were invited to talk at The Open Source Innovation Spring 2016 on May 3 in Paris.
- INRIA, represented by Emmanuel Baccelli, presented RIOT
- Eclipse Foundation, represented by Philippe Krief, to explain Why IoT needs Open Source Communities,
Philippe had the opportunity to introduce the AGILE project to the Open Source Parisian community which was pretty exited by the planned pilot projects.
